The First Day is a photographic portrait study of 30 school starters and their school uniform in Sheffield, UK, photographed in August and September 2017 and 2018.
The ticketed launch event is on Thursday 4th October at 5.30pm-8pm at Eyeye, Eldon Court, 112 Devonshire Street, Sheffield S3 7SF (opposite the Forum). Tickets here.
It is then open to all on Friday 5th October - Saturday 3rd November, Mon- Sat 9.30am-5.30pm.
Referencing the social media phenomenon of the ‘doorstep photograph’ the project references the images many parents and carers share online of their children as they leave home on their first day of school. The study sought participants from across the city, utilising social media to attract these in order to be reflective of the phenomenon.
The project was created by Karina Lax, a Sheffield based photographer with an interest in human behaviour, social compliance, fashion and dress.
